Resewn couch

Right before Christmas we brought my Grandma’s old couch home that had been sitting in a garage for over a year. So first it was my Grandma’s (My dad’s mom) then after she moved to a retirement home it came to live at my parents house for several years. Time and kids jumping on it took it’s toll and the front panel ripped. They didn’t know how to fix it and the repairman said was a huge/expensive job. So it was relinquished to my other grandma’s (my mom’s mom) garage. I have a soft spot in my heart for tufted couches and I was eager to get rid of these chairs. Hard to see, looking back through the posts, I barely have them pictured! They are beige run-of-the-mill hotel chairs.

You can see the couch here, but I cleverly (meaning cheaply) covered the front with a blanket

This Saturday Nick and I decided to tackle it…after a mouse was chased into the couch cavity by Jack!! EW. Well that settles it. No more procrastinating, (don’t worry, Jack got the critter.) First a look at the beast

Ugh, what a mess. So once we looked it over we realized what the problem was, the metal frame was originally help down by nails in the wood frame, they broke over time causing the front panel to rip off from the strain. I don’t know what the repairman didn’t realize that, but at least the couch has a home now!

Nick first removed all the old string and nails, and then retied the frame down with this thick twine we had around
It was probably thicker than neccesary but it’ll hold fast
We kept pulling the flap up to check the length of the ties with the couch to make sure it was consistent
Once it was all tied down, all I had to do was clean it up and pin it up.
After I pinned it I realized I didn’t stuff it, so as I sewed I just stuffed the polyester little by little in the cavity
I used really thick thread and a curved needle and sewed it up.
Good as new! The velvet wanted to stretch so it took some effort to keep it all straight.
All in all, a great satisfying project that only took a few hours!
At first we were skeptical about the Green but we’ve gotten used to it and with a new rug, the living room has a new look, pictures coming soon!
