Happy Good Friday everyone! I love the Easter season, new season, new life and of course remembering and thanking Jesus for all he has done for us. Last week, my friend Hilary got a group together to show us how to make Ukrainian Eggs. I love learning new things and since it ’tis the season to decorate eggs, what better way to celebrate!
{No, these aren’t our eggs, this example photo, along with brief history is here}
{beeswax & a kistka}
What you need, besides dye, is natural beeswax and this special tool to apply the wax called a Kistka. It’s like a little metal funnel attached to a handle. So you put a little bit of wax in it, hold it over a candle and once the wax melts inside you can apply it to the egg.
{warming up the kistka over a candle}
It’s a little complicated to explain and I’ve only done it once, so go here for instructions! Basically, once you have melted wax in your little metal funnel kistka, you pull it over the egg in a design. Starting with it white and gradually build it up in stages from lightest to darkest color of dye.
I totally didn’t take any pictures of the process…oops.
Once it’s done, your entire egg is pretty much covered in wax, so then you hold it over a candle to melt that wax.
Ta-Da! I realize it’s not nearly as slammin’ as the examples, but for my first one I was pretty proud.
